This Is Just Who I Am

Do you find me likeable?

Would you happily spend an hour with me?

How about two?

This Is Just Who I Am is a solo show about identity and authenticity, and the way we navigate the space between them. It introduces us to Miranda, an ordinary 29-year-old woman, and her thoughts about the world, touching on feminism, the meaninglessness of art, Turkish acid house and the plight of the bee. But is this the real Miranda? Or is it just what she wants you to see?

This Is Just Who I Am is a sharply observed exploration of the ‘ideal selves’ we strive to project and the negative mental health effects of our failure to live up to them. It sees Miranda try to be everything she wants you to think she is - intelligent, well-informed, cultured, popular, attractive - simultaneously satirising the ideals she so desperately wants to embody.

Using nothing but a microphone, a poorly put together soundtrack and what looks suspiciously like a child’s swimming costume, Miranda attempts - and ultimately fails - to hide her vulnerabilities. Part fictional autobiography, part ludicrous deceit, This Is Just Who I Am is an unashamedly nonsensical, excruciatingly honest and hilariously ironic portrait of the people we try to be when we don’t feel like ourselves.

The show has been funded by Arts Council England and supported by Greenwich & Lewisham Young People’s Theatre, Camden People’s Theatre and Nuffield Southampton Theatres.
