Carving Connections

I was invited by the Coppice Co-op to co-facilitate a series of sessions as part of Carving Connections, a woodland engagement and craft project in September-October 2025 with Stations of Welcome, a station adoption group based in Accrington that is mostly made up of muslim women.

Over the course of the project, the group visited the Coppice Co-op's yard in Silverdale to design and carve two twinned benches - one to be installed on Coldwell Meadow nature reserve in Silverdale, and the other to be installed in the Stations of Welcome community garden at Accrington train station. The benches were truly 'connected' – carved with a train track motif that flowed from one bench to the other, and sharing imagery of leaves, flowers, acorns (Accrington's symbol) and Bitterns (the symbol of the Arnside and Silverdale National Landscape).

The Coppice Co-op is a co-operatively managed woodland business that specialises in coppice woodland management and crafts. The project was delivered in partnership with the Arnside and Silverdale National Landscape, with funding from the Nature Calling fund and Community Rail Lancashire.
